Q. What exactly is a film festival?

A. A film festival is many things to the different attendees. If you are a member of the general public it is a place to comne and see newly released, outstanding films by independent and established filmmakers who want you share their work with you. You will be inspired and thrilled by the quality of the films you will see. If you are a filmmaker it is a place to come and meet other peers, network and establish new working relationships and opportunities to promote your film and potentially find interested distributors.

Q. How do you select the films that you show?

A. Each year, months in advance of the festival, submissions are accepted for consideration for the festival. For the 2011 season we received approximately 175 submissions. Our internal judging committee then uses a 10 part ranking system to evaluate each film and assign a numerical score to each film received. Each film is viewed by multiple jurors and a composite score is arrived at for each film. Final rankings are determined and we select the highest ranking films for screening. This year approximately 40 films will screened during the four day festival. We also assign honorable mention to films which resource limitations do not allow us to screen in the festival theaters.

Q. I want to see one of your films, but I can't be at the festival when it shows. What can I do?

A. We have an on-demand film bistro set up for just that reason. All of the films on our festival slate are also available for viewing on portable DVD players that you can check out and use for viewing on your schedule. All of the films including our honorable mention selections are available for viewing in our film-bistro.

Q. How can I learn more about a particular film?

A. If you visit our website and click on official selections on the home page (or right here) you will see a listing of all of the films on display at the festival by category. Click on any title and you will be taken to the synopsis page for that film where you can read the synopsis for the film supplied by the filmmaker. If it has been provided you can also view a trailer for the film. Feel free to browse all you want and come up with your own viewing plan!

Q. How do I know if a film is suitable for my children.

A. None of our films contain explicit sexual matter or gratuitous violence. However, many of our films may deal with mature subject matter. If a film has been rated by the MPAA rating service we make note of it on the film listing in the program and website. If the film has not been  rated, we will make note in the program listing if attendance requires parental accompaniment due to content for children under 18 years old.

Q. What does it cost to attend?

A. We are sensitive to cost and have attempted to keep our costs to patrons as low as possible and also offer special passes that make it affordable to view films on a variety of plans. We also want to encourage participation of families and have special passes to make it affordable for families to attend and enjoy the festival without having to spend a huge amount. Visit our E-shop by clicking here to find out what ticket price plans are available. Everything from single film passes, to day-passes, to all festival passes are available. Pass prices range from $9 for a single film viewing pass to $175 for a pass which will allow you full access to all films, workshops, and the awards ceremony. If you would like to arrange for a group discount contact SDCFF at: 877-457-7732 and leave a message. Someone will return your call.

Q. What if I plan to stay for more than one day?

A. We have arranged for a special rate at the Marriott of $120.00 per day for festival attendees. For more information regarding reservations click here. Other hotels nearby are also available.

Q. How much does it cost to park?

A. Our host venue, the La Jolla Marriott has arranged to offer parking for $5.00 per car. This is a significant discount over their regular parking fees. There is a good amount of on-street parking a short walking distance from the hotel including the University Towne Center shopping center and Costa Verde shopping centers.

Q. Are there restaurants close by?

A. Yes! Within walking distance are a number of all price ranges and cuisines. University Town Center and Costa Verde shopping centers have a number of eating establishments and a food court where budget minded can eat inexpensively. A Starbucks and other facilities are availble on the Marriott premises.
